Heisenberg Reviews
Washington Post- Recommended
"...Still, "Heisenberg" showcases two bracingly distinctive characters, and it is rewarding to watch them, in defiance of all likelihood, find common ground. What is an odd-couple love story if not a gesture of faith in humanity?"

"...There is comedy aplenty in Heisenberg, a host of funny lines and situations, delivered by the actors with expert timing. There is romance, not simply attraction and sexual interest but a gradual opening of each character’s self to the other. Alex, who in the show’s opening is shown in a series of light and sound snapshots of a lonely man tossing in his bed, is moved to give Georgie a lengthy, quite amusing, list of his preferences in music."

"...Stephens invokes physicist Werner Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle of quantum mechanics as foundation for the play’s spin on the unknowability of another person’s exact plans and motivations. Two strangers meet, and what can they pin down about each other until they know each other? If that stranger misleads and lies the way it appears Georgie is prone to lying — all while a large sum of money enters the picture — then uncertainty takes on even greater risks."

"...Director Joe Calarco brings the audience into the intimacy of the story with in-the-round seating; Pamela Weiner's scaled-down set consists of a space-delineating red floor and two structures that can convert into benches, tables, or a bed. Georgie Burns (Rachel Zampelli), a brash American woman, approaches Alex Priest (Michael Russotto), older and self-contained, and soon is turning his life upside down while also surprising herself."

"...This is a show that believes life is an adventure, and it doesn’t always need planning and money and events; it takes openness and kindness and readiness to take a chance to embark on a really great, somewhat wacky journey. And for 80-85 minutes we the audience get to share in this discovery."

"...A sparkling Broadway gem, by Tony Award-winning playwright Simon Stephens, Heisenberg is a surprisingly meaningful romantic comedy filled with poppy quirks and a disarming amount of heart and emotional depth. Directed by Joe Calarco, this strangely endearing road of unlikely chances and serendipitous happenstance is evocative in a curiously indescribable fashion that tickles and tugs at the heart."

"...Instead, as Georgie yearns for a future reunited with her estranged son, and Alex fixates on past love lost, Heisenberg points to the every-day love that, too often, goes unnoticed. The kind of love where, "if you pay attention to where it's going or how fast its moving, you stop seeing it properly." While there are moments that drag, Heisenberg is about as compelling as a 90-minute dialogue (with no intermission) in a black box theater can be."

"...But for its skillful presentation, "Heisenberg" is lacking, well, the Heisenberg. Had this simply been a show about two people and their relationship, I probably would have enjoyed it immensely. But the expectation set by the title, promotional materials, and director's note left me distracted through the performance. I felt as though I'd accidentally entered the wrong theatre."
