Finding Neverland at The National Theatre

Finding Neverland

The National Theatre
1321 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW Washington

See how Peter became Pan in the hit musical Finding Neverland, which Vogue raved was "a must-see you'll remember for years to come." Directed by visionary Tony winner Diane Paulus and based on the Academy Award-winning film starring Johnny Depp, Finding Neverland tells the incredible story behind one of the world's most beloved characters: Peter Pan. Playwright J.M. Barrie struggles to find inspiration until he meets four young brothers and their beautiful widowed mother. Spellbound by the boys' enchanting make-believe adventures, he sets out to write a play that will astound his audience. With a bit of pixie dust and a whole lot of faith, Barrie takes a monumental leap, leaving the real world behind for Neverland, where nothing is impossible and the wonder of childhood lasts forever. "...The touring company of Finding Neverland (book by James Graham, music and lyrics by Gary Barlow and Elliot Kennedy) is making a mercifully brief stop at Washington's National Theatre. Spinning a highly fictionalized, chronologically challenged, often counterfactual backstory of playwright J.M. Barrie's creation of Peter Pan, the musical is exemplary of how neither a talented cast nor strong production values can save a fundamentally flawed vehicle."

"...Barrie, in an iconic moment of his play, inquires if the audience believes in fairies. If so, he implores them to clap their hands. This opening night audience needed no such prodding-and, believe, the fairies do show up throughout, some rather quickly. It's rare to find a family friendly musical with such depth and soul as Paulus gives this one. Don't let this underrated gem of the season slip by. Finding Neverland plays but one short week before it sails off to the next destination."

"...The kids are stellar-often funny, delivering lines with a mix of purity and sarcasm in a perfectly British way. The boys have their own backyard shindig, wherein they form a band, complete with a washboard and drums via wooden spoons, to sing "We're All Made of Stars." Schoeller's George is the standout, strumming a small guitar and leading the troupe as the eldest would."
