Falsettos Reviews

"...A wonderfully sung production at the Keegan Theatre is timed to D.C.’s WorldPride celebration, and comes just a month after songwriter William Finn died at 73. While he was known for the crowd-pleasing “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” “Falsettos” is his main legacy, aided by a book co-written with James Lapine (known for “Into the Woods” and “Sunday in the Park With George”). The show arrived on Broadway in 1992, just a year ahead of “Angels in America” — another brilliant, neurotic, messy, two-part show in which characters confront the AIDS crisis while dealing with the complexities of sexual orientation and religious identity."

"...Keegan Theatre's revival of William Finn's multiple Tony Award-winning Falsettos leaves no doubt about why the show is among the most beloved musicals of recent decades. Its combination of cleverness, complexity, and heart makes it irresistible."

"...Director Kurt Boehm and company craft a tender number around explaining to Jason that Whizzer might never get well enough to leave the hospital. Morgan and Loughney also deliver an affectingly poignant take on "The Chess Game," Whizzer and Marvin's first good-bye song, but not their last."

"...With love, family, acceptance, and stunning musical talent, Keegan Theatre's "Falsettos" reminds us why live theatre is more important now than ever. William Finn and James Lapine's Tony Award-winning operatic-style musical opens on "A Tight-Knit Family:" Marvin (John Loughney), his ex-wife, Trina (Katie McManus), his son, Jason (Nico Cabrera), and his lover-turned-partner, Whizzer (Kaylen Morgan). The four work to blend their unconventional family with the help of Marvin's psychiatrist, Mendel (Ryan Burke). But when Mendel and Trina strike up their own relationship, Marvin is pushed to the edge in navigating his relationship with Whizzer."

"...Running at the Keegan Theatre from May 10 to June 15, Falsettos is a clever, emotionally resonant musical whose themes center on Jewish family and gay life in the late 1970s and early 1980s. At its center is the conflicted Marvin (John Loughney), a gay man who introduces us in an early sequence to his lover, Whizzer (Kaylen Morgan), and his ex-wife, Trina (Katie McManus), along with Marvin and Trina's precociously smart son, the 10-year-old Jason (Nico Cabrera). Oh, and, of course, their family therapist, Mendel (Ryan Burke)."
