A Misanthrope Reviews

"...Attitude is everything in Avant Bard's bright, brisk premiere of Minnicino's 100-minute script, now parading its insults in the intimate Theater II at Arlington's Gunston Arts Center. But the high shine on the superficial characters' veneer - driven by flamboyant rhyming language that generates laughs, groans and occasionally insight - makes the play more brittle than "Misanthrope"s need to be."

"...The audience didn't stop laughing all night. Between Matt Minnicino's rhyming couplet- filled, witty, knowing, sometimes bawdy adaptation (or, as he would have it, "distillation") of a Moliere classic and an acting ensemble with perfect comic timing, Avant Bard's A Misanthrope succeeds on every level."

"...This show is just so much fun that the audience lingered in the seats and in the playing space and in the hallway outside after the curtain call. Avant Bard has a winner with this one-it's funny with a smoothly delivered bite; brilliantly acted; and magnificently, unapologetically willing to skewer everyone. Do yourself a favor and grab tickets to this."

"...With A Misanthrope, Manhattan-based playwright Matt Minnicino has fashioned a "Moliere for millenials" with this very witty and sometimes crass twist on the 17th century playwright's The Misanthrope. Minnicino unfurls his cynical tale in Moliere's rhyming verse style, adding a meta layer to the play, moments when the characters comment directly to the audience on the silliness at hand. There is also liberal use of the word "fuck," which fits right in with the generationalized dialogue - just an observation not a criticism.)"

"...But I'm here to tell you there is an antidote, a delicious, raunchy send-up of your least favorite social and political set. Matt Minnicino's distillation of an old French classic, A Misanthrope, is a classic summer Romp on the Riviera, populated by some of the most deliciously stereotypical misfits ever."
