Carmen

Carmen

The Kennedy Center
2700 F Street, NW Washington

Filled with passion, jealousy, drama and death, Georges Bizet's classic opera revolves around a beautiful but hot-tempered gypsy girl who seduces a young corporal named Don José. The naive young man gives up everything for her, leaving his childhood sweetheart, rebelling against his superiors and joining a gang of smugglers. But when Carmen tires of him and moves on to the bullfighter Escamillo, Don José is driven by a fiery act of betrayal to exact violent and murderous revenge. Smoldering with sensuality and danger, this new production of Bizet's most famous opera pulses with erotic power -- from Carmen's rousing "Habanera" aria to the famous "Toreador Song" -- all culminating in a spectacular finale that includes a bullfight. Be at the Kennedy Center Opera House for this staging the Vancouver Observer describes as "full of lust, realism, a wild yet plausible plot, and characters that are impossible not to care about ... a sure-fire hit!"
