"...A success in London's West End in 1997, "Tryst" has had two runs in New York but had never been produced in the D.C. area until now, according to the Washington Stage Guild. Even the brittleness that sometimes mars this production can't disguise the fact that Leach's script is a smart, sturdy piece of entertainment. A nice middlebrow diversion, especially suited to "Masterpiece Theatre" fans, Dorothy L. Sayers aficionados and other Anglophiles - but you wouldn't want to take it home and frame it."

"...Oh, the things that we will do for love, or the semblance thereof. More than a wishful, flight of fancy, love is a basic human need. Love is the powerful, intense emotion of personal attachment; it's that passionate feeling of sexual desire and attraction toward a person with whom one is disposed to make a pair. In this fictionalized episode from George Love's depraved life, he has focused his attentions on Adelaide Pinchin (Emily Townley), a 39-year-old milliner’s assistant who imagines that she is fat. (She is not; she looks like – well, she looks like Emily Townley). His object: to marry her, and then steal her £ 50 (worth about $5,600 in today’s currency) and a diamond brooch worth perhaps twice as much.
