The Flying Dutchman

The Flying Dutchman

The Kennedy Center
2700 F Street, NW Washington

Misfortune, greed and fidelity collide in this storm-battered tale of one man's quest for lifesaving love. This Washington National Opera revival comes to the stage of The Kennedy Center Opera House to retell the nautical legend of the fearsome Flying Dutchman, cursed to sail the seas until he finds a woman who will love him until death. With its dramatic music and soaring arias, as well as an accessible story and a running time of two and a half hours (the same length as many movies), this is a perfect introduction to the world of opera and one of its great composers, Wagner. It's also a must-see for aficionados, as this production features formidable bass-baritone and two-time Grammy winner Eric Owens making his staged role debut as the show's condemned captain. Director Stephen Lawless brings this thrilling tale to the stage with striking imagery, telling the story "with clarity and theatrical flair while adding a few powerful images along the way" (New York Magazine). The Flying Dutchman is presented in German, with projected English translations.
