"...Paradoxically, given that his life revolves around a whizzing ball, this sportsman uses stillness to advantage. As portrayed by actor Jaysen Wright, in 1st Stage’s otherwise uneven production of Richard Greenberg’s “Take Me Out,” the gay baseball star named Darren Lemming is economical with movement when off the diamond. Whether he’s holding a news conference or parrying tension-fraught raillery in the clubhouse or gazing at an adversary with a mixture of tamped-down sadness and anger, Wright’s Darren anchors his surroundings with dramatic poise. This hotshot center fielder doesn’t need to fidget. He has earned his cool, seductive arrogance."

"...Just over ten years old, Richard Greenberg’s Take Me Out has already been widely accepted into the canon of Great American Plays. This is for good reason, as Greenberg’s tale of a baseball superstar who publicly comes out of the closet is both hilarious and moving, with deeply memorable characters. And 1st Stage, that smallish, newish theatre in Tyson’s Corner that is accessible via the new Silver Line, has mounted a stunning production of Greenberg’s serio-comedy."

"...When Take Me Out premiered, the sheer amount of male nudity it contained created its share of controversy. In director Doug Wilder’s production more than a decade later, it merely feels like a natural consequence of the show’s locker-room setting. Some of Wilder’s decisions are a little problematic—early use of slow motion feels stilted, a pivotal scene between Mungitt and Lemming is blocked in a confusing way—but these are quibbles. The 1st Stage production succeeds in creating moments that are alternately dramatically tense, uneasily sympathetic, and hysterically funny. Through it all it, Take Me Out remains an unconventional, sincere, heartfelt ode to America’s pastime."
