When a young woman’s father, a former black revolutionary, reappears to obtain a piece of her deceased mother’s legacy, he discovers that fatherhood might be the most challenging revolution of all. The Huffington Post names Morisseau as a “direct heir to the magical wordsmiths named Lorraine Hansberry, Tennessee Williams, and August Wilson” for her vibrant exploration of the point where the personal and political collide. Morriseau is a 2014 recipient of the Kennedy Prize for Drama.

"...In a packed 90 minutes, Morisseau does splendid work fleshing out these lives against a very old-fashioned plot. Ashanti X has left Nina the famous letters she wrote to Kenyatta while he was a political prisoner, and he wants them. How they negotiate is fascinating: “Normal” family language is warped by deep habits of cons and hustles, and director Joseph W. Ritsch’s production keeps a keen eye on the way these characters nearly connect before stepping back to figure out who is playing whom. Everybody’s got game."

Sunset Baby tells the story of Ashanti X and Kenyatta Shakur, lovers and black revolutionary leaders in the 80’s. But his cadre was infiltrated by government forces and its members killed. He tried to rob an armored car, failed, was arrested, and sent to jail. His Warrior Woman became a crack addict and died shortly before the play begins. The promise they sent to the future was Nina (Valeka J. Holt), who they named for the singer Nina Simone.
