"...We've all had that nightmare- showing up in our underwear and not knowing what we supposed to say or how we got there? Now imagine that magnified tenfold; being on stage in front of a huge live audience and having the same dilemma four times over. And certainly many of us are familiar with that too strict teacher from our grade school days; perhaps some of us even had that tyrant of a nun who would smack your fingers with a yardstick. Both of these scenarios are what you will find in the double-billed comedic genius of Bay Theatre Company's evening with Christopher Durang featuring two one act plays: The Actor's Nightmare and Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All. Directed by Richard Pilcher, these uproarious if risque comedies will have you rolling in the aisles, of course bringing a sense of humor is required."

"...Director Richard Pilcher's creative instincts are in full shuffle mode, with a talented cast intelligently deployed to maximum effect. It's a delight to experience both plays at once, each in conversation with the other, as well as the range of the actors' skills. One actor in particular, Rena Cherry Brown, is worthy of note. As the premiere non-equity performer in the DC area, Ms. Brown is cast in her third major lead role in as many years as the invidious Sister (she received a Helen Hayes award as Vivian in Wit and is up for another as Violet in August: Osage County). But the bonus here is her all but unrecognizable ensemble portrayal in a throw-away role at the outset. Is there a nomination category for an actor playing two characters in the same program? If not, I'd like to propose one."

"...Steven Carpenter is a laugh-riot as George Spelvin in The Actor's Nightmare - or so the other characters call him - this production is essentially a play within a play within a play. Carpenter delivers his lines with panache and is quite convincing that he is in the play within the play. George does not know who he is or who his characters are, but the absolute worst is - he doesn't know his lines! Add in Rena Cherry Brown, as Meg the Stage Manager, with her butch demeanor and Bronx accent and it's a double laugh riot."

Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All For You is the production’s comic powerhouse. Sister Mary (Rena Cherry Brown) is a nun, a nun with big opinions and a short fuse. She begins her time with the audience addressing the cold, hard facts of Catholicism, from the parameters of Purgatory to immaculate conception. Beautifully lit photos of the Pope, Jesus Christ, and Richard Nixon line the walls (Lighting, Mariane Meadows) of the makeshift classroom.
