Running on Broadway in the late nineteen sixties, this play is less a story than an allegory. Closing out the 2015/2016 season at Compass Rose Theater, Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley's The Roar of the Greasepaint, The Smell of the Crowd takes to the stage with its beautiful music and curious political statement that burbles just beneath the surface of the overarching allegory of the tale in total. Directed by Lucinda Merry-Browne with Musical Direction by Anita O'Connor, the show brings lively musical numbers together against potent caricature stereotypes that articulate a broad sweeping statement about political classicism in America."

"...I'm dwelling on the production's inadequacies in part out of frustration, for with the glaring exception of the pianist, all the essential components of an outstanding Greasepaint were in evidence. Had they been assembled with more boldness, commitment, attention to detail and professionalism, one of the most original and under-produced Broadway musicals might have risen close to the heights its creators envisioned."
