"... This was my third go-round with “Black Watch,” which was developed at Edinburgh Fringe back in 2006 by Tiffany, Burke, Steven Hoggett on movement and Davey Anderson with music —and my second with it in the Harman. I don’t recall the voices of the 10-man cast being quite this hard to discern before. And yet, the 110 minutes you spend with these excellent actors is anything but lacking in comprehensibility. By other vital means —video,choreography, sound effects, costuming, songs —“Black Watch” conjures the experiences of these rough young men so powerfully that you cannot leave the theater without the impression of their psyches having been seared into yours."

"... The strength of this play, wonderfully directed by John Tiffany, lies not within the structure of script or even how it conveys a larger social message about war. Issues such as post-traumatic stress and injuries and deaths as a result of a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) attack, both mainstays in modern warfare, are explored, but do not add anything new to what we already know. Perhaps it’s because we as audience members have heard these stories so many times in recent years that they eventually lose impact. When the play focuses on these elements, it’s difficult to see what makes the Black Watch different than other military units. After all, those experiences transcend cultures and state boundaries. Perhaps that’s the point, but I was less moved when these larger issues were examined."

Lyrical and hard-hitting, jocular and upsetting in equal measure, Black Watch is a deeply honest examination of the culture of soldiering, a portrait of the emotional and mental effects of war on warriors, and a vivid representation of the enormous disconnect between the minority of those who serve in a professional army in wartime and the majority who casually check up on them from positions far removed.
