Imagine Jeremy Jacob’s surprise when he’s accosted on the beach by a motley crew of pirates. They need a digger to bury their treasure and Jeremy, clutching his little sand spade, is recruited. At first, the pirate life is all fun: swabbing decks, counting ducats and singing shanties. But when night falls, Jeremy gets no bed time story and no tucking in. And when there is a storm, they get very wet! At last, Jeremy comes up with a novel idea which both pleases the pirates and allows him to return to his “regular” life in time for his next soccer practice. A light-hearted summer musical romp! "...Speaking of show tunes, when Braid and his corsairs are singing in deep, growly voices, Cardarelli's lyrics can be hard to discern. This flaw notwithstanding, "How I Became a Pirate" should amuse adult audiences (who may particularly relish the script's reference to CPAs, Certified Pirate Accountants) while entertaining youngsters, who may go around saying "Ahoy, matey!" for days."

"...Better batten down the hatches. A band of wackadoodle pirates has taken over Imagination Stage in Bethesda. Even before the theater lights dim, these bedraggled seafarers — think Jack Sparrow on speed — stream down the aisles. One husky hoodlum even lounges in an empty theater seat until first mate Jacque leans over the theater's second-floor balcony and hollers that he needs to get on board."

Director Paul Bosco McEneaney has created a wonderful diversion that delights the young and old with an ensemble that is one part Keystone Cops, one part Three Stooges and one large part Dustin Hoffman and Bob Hoskins from “Hook.” The book strikes the right balance of mixing up a simple child-engrossing plot with physical comedy and family-appropriate humor while still throwing in a bit of adult wit to keep the parents entertained.
