Ay, Carmela

GALA Hispanic Theatre
3333 14th Street, NW Washington

Carmela and Paulino are a travelling vaudeville comedy duo who wind up in the wrong place at the wrong time and fall into the hands of Franco's fascists troops during the Spanish Civil War. After witnessing an execution, they are held captive and forced to entertain other prisoners and soldiers. As Carmela and Paulino's story unfolds, this black comedy tells of their love and loss, and is a poignant testimony to the inhumanity of war. ¡Ay, Carmela! premiered in Spain in 1987 and has become a huge success in the Spanish-speaking world. This co-production between GALA Hispanic Theatre and the Spanish company Acción Sur is performed in Spanish with English surtitles.
