It's 1958. Sandy Dumbrowski and Danny Zuko spend their summer days at the beach, and their summer nights falling in love. They don't expect to see each other again. When Sandy transfers to Rydell High, she's surprised to find Danny isn't exactly the guy with whom she fell in love. With Rizzo and the Pink Ladies coaching the wholesome Sandy, and Kenickie and the other Burger Palace Boys razzing Danny, who knows if true love will prevail.

"...Eye-catching as this is, the musical numbers (which include songs added for the 1978 film) don’t quite envelop you. The familiar melodies tiptoe in, rather than declaring themselves; there isn’t much punch in the five-piece ensemble playing this retro-pop score. The amplification was gratingly loud in the Olney’s “Annie” last winter, but between music director Aaron Broderick and sound designer GW Rodriguez, the tunes are somehow undercooked here."

"...Much of the magic, in complete harmony with the outstanding performances, comes from the scenery, the lighting and the costumes. Olney seems to have perfected seamless scene changes without giving up a thing in the way of creating innovative settings. Set designer Robert Klingelhoefer's design incorporates the live musicians in a way that adds rather than detracts and also employs some imaginative set pieces that allow the superb lighting to sync perfectly with each changing scene. The costumes also play an important role in a period piece like this, and they match the excellence of the scenery and the lighting to bring the whole picture together."

"...The appeal of Grease, however, is that it makes no effort to sanitize the dark side of teenage life: teenage pregnancy, underage drinking, and peer pressure are all prominent themes here. While these issues have plagued many a high school drama director over the years (usually resolved by judicious script cutting or simply glossing over the subject), Director Bobby Smith confronts each challenging moment by embracing it: he slows the brisk pace to give each moment the time and mature treatment it deserves. This makes Olney’s Grease a perfect springboard for discussion about some rather serious topics between parents and children."

Grease is one of those Broadway musicals that’s been grown, shrunk, and re-shaped over time so that each version you see can be rather different from the last. The Olney Theatre’s sprightly but not completely satisfying take on the show resembles more recent Broadway and London iterations, circa 2007, with perhaps a snip or two.
