"...History skids into melodrama in "A Shadow of Honor," the ambitious but clunky and over-explicit play receiving its world premiere at the Keegan Theatre. Working with a double-stranded plot whose Civil War and Vietnam War allusions may please history buffs, Virginia playwright Peter Coy has aimed to ask profound questions about responsibility, the effect of wartime trauma and the legacy of guilt. Unfortunately, he tackles these topics with a jarring lack of subtlety, while so compressing the play's scandal-laced narratives that the stories feel as abrupt and sensational as a pair of tabloid headlines."

"...Yes, the play will certainly give you lots to think about, on this and other topics such as the deterministic nature of biochemistry (no kidding!). But the play doesn't consistently engage. Keegan has put a lot of talent into this production, and there's nothing wrong with a serious play about serious things, but Coy's dialogue can be too forced, and his story too melodramatic to balance all the heavy themes."

Peter Coy’s new play A Shadow of Honor strives to explore the impact of the stresses of war both directly on its participants and indirectly on their loved ones. He portrays two families living a century apart, inhabiting the same home in Nelson County, Virginia. It is an intriguing idea, but one that has only mixed success in its world premiere production at the Keegan Theatre.
