"...Directors Ian Allen and Kate Debelack have cast "Wife Swappers" with a keen sense of how average Americans look and behave; the actors' naked composure in the tiny theater aids greatly in maintaining the evening's naughty persuasiveness. Baicich is particularly good as a woman who becomes less resistant (and more inebriated) as the night wears on, and so is Kris Roth as the guest with the loudest, filthiest mouth."

"...For a show that seems to pride itself on its open-mindedness -- its most sympathetic character is a transvestite played by the very funny Lucrezia Blozia -- it comes down awfully hard on its aging libertines, making them unrepentant homophobes who find gay sex (and seemingly no other kind) repugnant. But there's something paradoxically very charming about the way it invites its performers to let it all -- no, really, all -- hang out without judging them for being physically ordinary middle-age specimens: soft and round, pale and hairy, by all appearances having denied themselves no indulgence."

"...The acting is all well done, which I’d call no small achievement. I’m not sure what would be harder – inhabiting a casually callous person or doing it in your underwear – or less – within a foot of the front row. There were a few more line stumbles than I’d expect for a show that’s been in previews for a few days, but it was only a minor distraction. More annoying was the deliberate choice to have the actors stand with their backs to the audience at multiple times. In a fifty seat black-box theater that made for a number of times when much of our view was blocked."

"...Wife Swappers is a simultaneously hilarious, poignant and infuriating look at the human animal’s approach to sex and the unbridled expression of beliefs (no matter how bigoted) when in like-minded company. While the very existence of the play at all obviously takes advantage of the (relative) freedom of expression allowed in our culture, Wife Swappers envisions a utopian hedonism, engaging in simultaneously ebullient and constrained sexual expression, which begs entirely new conversations about the ethics of sex, marriage, Christianity and just how reverently do we really want to celebrate the holidays. Wife Swappers' lively parade of characters reveal that their very unlikeliness may convey their version of humanity that much more palpably."

When last we left Cherry Red, lo these many years ago, these raunch specialists extraordinaire were staging a play by an obscure writer named Tracy Letts. It is uncertain whether Wife Swappers playwright Justin Tanner (Oklahomo!, Voice Lessons) has a Pulitzer in his future, but this story has good bones, and serves admirably as a vehicle for some excellent performances, particularly by the remarkable Baicich.
