A brilliantly witty story of faith confronting reason, where the master of paradox presents the dire consequences of losing, not one’s belief, but one’s skepticism. Chesterton, the famed essayist and author of the popular Father Brown mystery stories, wrote this play, still popular in Britain but not seen in the USA for decades, at Shaw’s urging; it was adapted into the film The Magician by Ingmar Bergman, which the technology installed at the Undercroft Theatre will allow us to screen during the run.

"...The theater being a magical place itself, there isn't much doubt where the play's sympathies will lie. Still, you can manage without real suspense in this kind of exercise as long as you have intellectual intrigue, but while the performance is thoughtful, it's something short of sprightly in the low-ceilinged Undercroft Theatre (Vincent Clark's neat turn as the half-daft Duke being the nimblest comic exception)."

As topics for debate go, it’s a diverting one, and as long as Chesterton’s characters are bandying semantics in that realm, the play’s decent fun. When it moves into more melodramatic territory, though, and when it suggests at last that love will surely conquer all? Well, that’s a different kind of trick to pull off, now isn’t it?"
