Othello is a monumental and searing tragedy, with a plot driven by the destructive forces of power, pride, revenge, and prejudice. Written in about 1603, Shakespeare's tale follows the rise to prominence and society marriage of Venice's army general, a Moor lauded for his military prowess and service to the city. Desdemona's father disapproves. Tensions mount when Othello's trusted ensign, Iago, is passed over for a promotion and responds with calculated wrath.

"...Chesapeake Shakespeare Company opened its 15th Season on Friday with one of the most tragic of Shakespeare’s tragedies, Othello. It was the first time in the history of the company that they have performed Othello. If they were waiting until they felt they could really do it justice, their patience has paid off. Chesapeake Shakespeare Company’s production of Othello was everything you’d want it to be."

"...The entire cast is strong, well-chosen and does this production proud. But the key is the central triad of actors who are perfectly matched to their roles and to each other. In Everyman's "Ruined," a difficult and challenging play about the plight of women in war-torn Congo, D.C.'s McIntosh did beautiful, nuanced work. Here again, he is not only physically commanding but masters the complexities of the many emotions that surface as jealousy takes its grip"

"...The best acting in the show is in the smaller roles. As Cassio, Alex Miletech IV has an explosive moment with Iago when he laments the loss of his reputation. It’s one of the truest pieces in the play, and I found myself genuinely sorry for Cassio, used so thoughtlessly as a pawn. Stephen Lopez has but a few scenes in multiple roles, but his Duke of Venice seemed most human, and the picture of nobility as he entreats Desdemona’s father to forgive her for marrying without permission. As Emilia, Iago’s wife and another unwitting tool in Othello’s destruction, Briana Manente was above reproach; her horror at her husband’s actions was genuine, and provided the stable backdrop for the denouement of the last act."
