"...The production of Lobby Hero that Artistic Director Alex Levy has programmed and directed at 1st Stage is first-rate. Levy has respected the text with astute trust in its integrity as a thought-provoking mirror held up to everyday ethics and quiet moral heroism. There are laughs here and there, but this is something quite other than a conventional comedy. Though it seems to begin in shallows, it steadily reveals itself to be deceptively and compellingly deep."

"...In a play that Time Out New York once heralded as "the best drama, best comedy and best romance of the year all rolled into one," Jeff is a 27 year old self-described "f- up" who takes a night shift job as a security guard of an apartment building. He is finally able to get back on his feet when he gets embroiled with an incident concerning his straight-laced employer, and two cops, one a female rookie and the other at the height of his career. Alex Levy directs this perfect blend of actors, rife with comedic chemistry."

"...Lonergan's script depicts a New York City from the 1980's or 1990's. 1st Stage Theatre's production of Lobby Hero is set in the present day; however, the New York City depicted remains stuck in the past in minor details, such as the mention of a character's father serving in the Korean War, Jeff referring to newspaper to look for apartments, and the lack of presence of modern technology. Creative tweaks to lines and addition of more modern props could bring this play to the modern New York City that we know today. The stationary lobby set, designed by Kathryn Kawecki, and the costumes, also by Kawecki, remain timeless, which works to the production's advantage. The set screams New York City with its art deco accents, as well as the walls and floors that are skillfully painted to look like marble. The costumes, including the police uniforms and Dawn's civilian clothes, are fit for a modern New York City."
