Two of theatre's top talents -- legendary composer John Kander (Chicago) and acclaimed playwright Greg Pierce (Slowgirl) -- bring this chilling new musical to the Signature Theatre stage. The highly anticipated show centers around 17-year-old Luke, who returns home after mysteriously vanishing one year previous. Profoundly changed, Luke and his parents struggle to adjust to life following his disappearance. Luke only finds solace with Emily, the quirky proprietor of an offbeat garden shop, as he grapples with a past undone and a coming of age that came too late to a boy who just wants to fade away. Kander and Pierce previously collaborated on the well-reviewed off-Broadway musical The Landing.

Inside the roughly two-hour’s traffic of this world premiere, there is perhaps a superb ninety-minute musical, which despite the bizarre nature of the experience conveyed tells universal truths. "...Greg Pierce’s book has a very interesting idea but it needs more focus than what director Liesl Tommy has given it. The character of Luke’s girlfriend Suze (Laura Darrell) and Detective Marks (Bobby Smith) are only in a single scene apiece. I would have liked to have seen both of these characters throughout. In particular the detective because Luke’s story was a big TV event and it would have been interesting to see how the authorities handled the case rather than just one interrogation scene between Marks and Luke."

This story begins where most stories end…with the protagonist’s homecoming. But as Luke wanders, bewildered, through the full-throated town he hears both the comforting chorus, praising God for his safe return, and the accusing verses, wondering why he didn’t do more to escape.

I myself was riveted and I cannot stop thinking about what I saw. Signature Theatre’s Kid Victory is one of those shows you can’t unsee…but you must see."
