Hope springs eternal in the postgame locker room of Barely Athletic, the aptly named amateur soccer team competing in a five-a-side pub league in the tiny Yorkshire town of Hull. The fishing town has seen better days -- as have Barely Athletic's players, a ragtag group of gay and lesbian footballers (along with the "token straight guy," Joe) who nurse their wounds after matches, sharing funny anecdotes and personal stories along the way. A hilarious and heartbreaking play about romance, resilience, taking chances and moving on by rising U.K. playwright Tom Wells (winner of Britain's 2012 George Devine Award for Most Promising Playwright), Jumpers for Goalposts now makes the leap across the pond for its U.S. premiere at D.C.'s Studio Theatre.

"...But it's Jonathan Judge-Russo who becomes the one you root for as Beardy Geoff, a guitar-strumming gay bear who fumbles his way through attempts to better the lives of his teammates and friends. Beardy is more of a player off than on the field, and is even less of a singing musician - and yet he lets nothing, not even a barely mentioned traumatic experience in his past, stop him from playing anyway, missed goal after missed note. He'll eventually get something right, he seems to reason. And lo and behold, eventually he does."

The talent of Tom Wells, regarded as one of Britain’s brightest young playwrights, is well-displayed in Jumpers for Goalposts on stage now at Studio Theatre. Wells has the rare ability to find humor in ordinary people and here he mines the comedy in the real-life difficulties of his characters with wit and affection. You might well think works such as The Fully Monty, with less music and only a partial monty.
