Jesus Christ Superstar Reviews

"...Calarco, his designers, and cast have given a nearly five-decade old show some new, fresher "buzz." The Signature Jesus Christ Superstar captures a great spirit; the spirit of a religious and political awakening."

"...In Signature Theatre’s powerfully immersive new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar, director Joe Calarco adroitly crosses religion, art, and politics for a divinely entertaining take on the classic rock opera. Set among shifting slabs of stone, Calarco’s modern-dress staging — marked by minimalist set design and maximum commitment — teems with the energy and raw emotion of its first-rate cast and musicians."

"...Signature Theatre's production of "Jesus Christ Superstar" retains all of the aspects that make the original great while infusing new life and meaning into an already powerful story. Whether you are already a fan of this musical or are looking into seeing this story for the first time, I highly recommend their production."

"...Karma Camp's choreography, on the other hand, is a treat, particularly in the freewheeling first-act "Hosanna" and the vaudevillian second-act "King Herod's Song." And the band, under musical director William Yanesh, was jamming - among high points was Yanesh's own funky-gospel keyboards in "What's the Buzz." Jason Lyons's lighting is smart and powerful, from its moody textures to its deific narrow bright spot treatments."

"...Signature Theatre's current production of this classic isn't necessarily the religious experience one might desire. With at least one of the leads completely ill-suited to his character and sometimes too frenetic pacing, this production, at least for me, is emotionally unsatisfying."
