"...But rest assured, there are some wonderfully entertaining personalities in the Shakespeare Theatre Company’s “Henry IV, Part 2,” which is directed by Michael Kahn and is running in repertory with “Henry IV, Part 1.” No, I’m not talking about Sir John Falstaff, the boastful, hard-drinking rogue who is portrayed by Stacy Keach in both plays — which essentially constitute two halves of a sturdy and engrossing, if not revelatory, production. I’m talking about the two country justices of “Part 2,” Shallow (Ted van Griethuysen) and Silence (Bev Appleton) — elderly, easily intoxicated gentlemen who briefly carouse and reminisce with Falstaff as that braggart waits for his old friend Prince Hal (Matthew Amendt) to inherit the crown."

The exhilarating feeling is one reason we are drawn to him, but it is the stuff of dreams. In Shakespeare Theatre Company’s spectacular Henry IV Part II, directed by Michael Kahn, the young Prince Hal gives up fantasy and rebellion for the sobering and often harsh realities of kingship. The production is a masterpiece of mature art. It is not to be missed."

The focus of Part 2 is Hal and Falstaff: can their spirits still be kindred in the aftermath of Part 1? How might Hal be feeling now about agreeing to let Falstaff claim that he, not Hal, killed Hotspur? Those two roles are enormous. The number of lines and the quantity of psychological and circumstantial context which the actors must have ready at all times boggles the ordinary mind.
