A live video game performance (where the audience controls the action) created by German theater company machina eX. Presented in partnership with the Goethe-Institut Washington. In this live-action twist on the familiar "escape the room" video game, two audience teams must help their human avatars escape from the clutches of an evil mastermind, using only the materials at hand to find the keys, unlock the doors, and beat the clock.

"...I particularly enjoyed the room that evoked an aging mad scientist's secret den. Lined up on a shelf in this space were jars that appeared to contain preserved human organs. One of the jars was (ominously, to my mind) labeled "Celia." Coincidence? Given the audacity of the "Happy Hour" experiment, maybe not."

"...As I was leaving I heard an enthusiastic audience member say "I really enjoyed that, but is it Theatre?" Absolutely it is. I lost myself in Happy Hour and if the best theatre can take you away from yourself, then that is exactly the experience of Happy Hour. Some of the rules of theatre might be different, but all the better for it. If there is a certain comfort to a curtain, there is an absolute thrill to tearing it down too, and that's what Happy Hour does. Where does theatre begin and where does it end? Who cares. Go and see this "original adventure" and let Theatre take care of itself. You'll be pleased you did."

"...Happy Hour may be the most elaborate theater production I've seen in a long time. Every element, from the game controls and video system, to the challenge rooms, to the naturalistic, responsive acting, works in concert to create the illusion of total power over the actors' lives. The team dynamic pulls people out of their shells in unpredictable and entertaining ways. In the end, the play flips the normal dynamics of theater on their head, turning the characters' journeys into referenda on the audience itself."

"...As interesting as it may have been, Happy Hour was a little frustrating as well. Not in working with others but in having the person on the screen do what you actually wanted her to do. Ask her to use the knife and she'll just jab the air with it instead of say, poking into a device to get out a key."
