Failure: A Love Story takes us to 1928, the last year of each of the Fail Sisters' lives. Nelly was the first of the Fail girls to die, followed soon after by her sisters Jenny, June and Gerty. As with so many things in life-blunt objects, disappearances and consumption-they never saw death coming. Written by Chicago playwright Philip Dawkins, Failure: A Love Story is a magical, musical fable that traces the sisters' triumphs and defeats, lived out in the rickety two-story building by the Chicago River that was the Fail family home and clock shop. This funny, moving and profoundly wise play reminds us that in the end, all that remains is love.

"...The musical shortcomings doubtless reflect limited-budget realities for Hub, a company that has displayed an impressive propensity for showcasing new, recent or lesser-known scripts (“Failure” had its world premiere in Chicago in 2012). Another offering in this line, “Failure” may sometimes feel overly cutesy, but in general you have to admire Dawkins’s determination to tackle age-old themes — mortality, loss, love — in an unusual, monk-parakeet-bedecked manner."

DCTheatreScene - Somewhat Recommended

I wish I could like this story, a lighthearted tale of three sisters dying young in Chicago ninety or so years ago, more than I do. The Hub Theatre presents it briskly and stages it imaginatively, and it features some good performances – including excellent work by Chris Stinson. But in the end, it doesn’t seem like playwright Philip Dawkins takes his story seriously. So why should I?
