Nine-time Grammy Award winner Sheryl Crow and Oscar-winning screenwriter Barry Levinson (The Natural, Rain Man) make their highly anticipated theatrical debut with this world premiere musical adaptation of Levinson's landmark movie Diner. Tony-winning director and choreographer Kathleen Marshall joins Crow and Levinson to transform Diner's groundbreaking exploration of burgeoning adulthood and friendship for the modern stage. Set during Christmas of '59 in Baltimore, and infused with a swinging 1950s rock 'n' roll sound, the show centers around a circle of childhood friends who reunite in an all-night diner. The men, now in their early 20s, confront the realities of adulthood: marriage, careers, money -- and the ever-mysterious opposite sex.

"...There’s no reason to believe these two consummate pros might not achieve a musicalized “Diner” of real distinction, one that distills in even livelier ways Levinson’s richly detailed film about a group of Baltimore buddies who don’t yet know how to behave like men. The production at Signature — directed and choreographed by Broadway’s Kathleen Marshall and all but sold out through the end of January — is a useful first-draft exercise for them. It’s also worthwhile for anyone who loves the film, Crow’s music or the opportunity to meet on the ground floor a show that aspires to higher levels. It may be ripped from the big screen, as so many musicals are nowadays. But given the seriousness of the effort here, “Diner” the musical is not a rip-off."

It takes only the initial notes and musical measures of oldies but goodies to bring us back willingly into the past. Some blissfully glide into the fortunate reverie of an untroubled time; others float back into the happy turbulence of glory days as when they tried to find their way into some semblance of adulthood."

If only there were more character development, and conversations about characters instead of just sex, love and football. And if only Signature's great star Nova Y. Payton wasn't wasted as an ensemble player who, as a stripper, shows off more of her skin than her vocal range."

Now in their early-twenties, these men have all reunited for an upcoming wedding of one of them. This all-night diner has everything they need; food, a jukebox, and cozy red seats where they can sit for hours discussing what every twenty-something talks about: marriage, careers, money, and the ever-mysterious opposite sex."

You want to put on a letter sweater, grab some pom-poms and root for Diner, the world premiere musical based on Barry Levinson’s seminal male-bonding movie, to find its way. The ingredients are there—Levinson’s a great storyteller and has a knack for indelible, oddball characters. Sheryl Crow’s doing the music and lyrics, need we say more?
