Carmen: An Afro-Cuban Jazz Musical

Carmen: An Afro-Cuban Jazz Musical

Olney Theatre Center
2001 Olney-Sandy Spring Rd. Olney

Georges Bizet's timeless, passion-fueled opera Carmen gets an innovative Afro-Cuban jazz twist, thanks to Tony nominee Moisés Kaufman (The Laramie Project Cycle). With music from two-time Grammy-winner Arturo O'Farrill, and choreography by Sergio Trujillo, Kaufman's transformed Carmen into a sexy, swinging musical that moves the action from 1820s Spain to Cuba in 1958. Carmen is now a gun-runner for the rebels at the dawn of the country's revolution. She falls fiercely in love with José, a Batista loyalist. But, when Cuba's boxing legend Camilo returns to Havana, Carmen and José's romance falls apart tragically. Watch their love triangle burst into flames when the world premiere of this fiery redux hits the Olney Theatre Center.
