The Young Vic production of Arthur Miller's A View from the Bridge was the theatrical event of the Broadway season -- in fact, it won two Tony Awards this year for Best Revival of a Play and Best Director. Now you can see this illustrious revival of A View from the Bridge, directed by Ivo van Hove, when it comes to The Kennedy Center's Eisenhower Theater in Washington, D.C. The story follows Eddie, a Brooklyn longshoreman with a deep love for his 17-year-old niece, who he's raised as his own daughter. Eddie becomes jealous and enraged when his immigrant cousin falls in love with the girl. The New York Times said that this View leaves audiences feeling "ridiculously blessed to have been a witness to the events you just saw."

"...Other themes were close to Miller's heart and intellect in the 1950s; namely, the crisis in national morality brought on by McCarthyism, its insidious gift for stirring paranoia and turning friend against friend, family member against family member. Set in a working-class Italian neighborhood where blood loyalty is a veritable religion, "A View From the Bridge" bottles this atmosphere of intense suspicion in its portrayal of the emotional fire raging in the Carbone household. It's ignited after two red-blooded male relatives from Italy (the virile Alex Esola and Dave Register) of Eddie's wife, Beatrice (a sublime Andrus Nichols), arrive illegally to work on the docks and are given shelter in the Carbones' home."

Arthur Miller’s 1955 play immediately followed his iconic “The Crucible” (1953), and soon after “Death of a Salesman” (1949), so if it is less well known now, this is merely a function of how well known the surrounding work is. “A View From The Bridge” is no less powerful, no less compelling, and no less relevant now than Miller’s preceding masterpieces. Van Hove’s stark minimalism allows space, and time for the play’s raw qualities to tear at the audience, drawing out the play’s impact without affectation or apology."

More than in an earlier production of the play that I saw (Broadway, 1983, with Tony LoBianco in a Tony-nominated performance and DC's Robert Prosky as Alfieri), and more than when I read the play-script, van Hove's take achieves an eventual grandeur that honors Miller's intention. More importantly, it (like the best productions of the Greeks) engages you viscerally, creating tension, even surprise, despite the fact that you know exactly where the story is headed."
