Founding Artistic Director Ian Gallanar (who also directs) has crafted a new spin on the classic tale – rather than setting it in 1843 London, it takes place in 1843 Baltimore. The story is all the same; at its heart, A Christmas Carol is a timeless tale of “redemption” – as explained by Gallanar in his director’s notes. As far as the essence of the tale, Gallanar hits it right on the head."

"...This holiday season, the Chesapeake Shakespeare Company is giving a clever, local twist to Charles Dickens’ classic Christmas tale of redemption and generosity. Adapted and directed by founding artistic director, Ian Gallanar, the play keeps the story in the same era but the setting is right here in Baltimore. In fact, Dickens visited this city when he toured America in 1842 and stayed only a few blocks from CSC’s new location. A Christmas Carol was published a year later."

Christmas Carol is transported to Baltimore, 1843, and while the change of location does little either good or bad to the story itself, it does contribute to the communal feeling of the production, and allows a few good winks at local history and landmarks.
