Death, breasts and the private lives of animals are just some of the topics covered in Deb Margolin's funny, provocative solo show 8 Stops. Structured around the subway ride of a motherless child who Margolin realizes she has but eight stops to raise, this soul-searching work also contemplates the suburbs, the spiritual exurbs, desire, and the grief of endless compassion. Ultimately, 8 Stops presents an examination of life and death through the eyes of Margolin's son, carried along by her outsized wit and charm at Silver Spring's Randolph Road Theatre.

"...Deb's performance was at its best when she was able to leave behind the script, held in her hands throughout, in the more confident sections of the text. She managed the difficulty of holding the pile of paper very well in general, but it still seemed to restrict her capacity for physical storytelling and gesture. She was particularly powerful declaiming "I'm raising children and this is the world," in a mantra-like sequence that almost turns into performance poetry."

"...With all of her skill, the performance is an acquired taste that can leave you waiting for something more significant to happen. Still, thanks to her talent and genuine care, she helps us slow down and appreciate the wonder of the moments ticking by. And whether they're spent comforting a child, listening to her son's fears and phobias about death, getting through a bout of cancer, or just being there to witness her son's aloneness, there's a value and grace to that. That's what happens in the signature piece at the end of the show where she shares a subway ride with a chatty little fellow who doesn't even realize, but soon will, how alone he is."
